Born in 1981, Maya Zbib is a theater/performance artist living and working in Lebanon. She is also a founding member of Zoukak Theatre Company and Cultural association.
Since her first devised performance “Water Vibes” (2000), Maya has performed in different genres of professional theater productions featuring in numerous international festivals.
She recently started developing her own performance work with “Telescope: in my tight socks a sky and transparent moons in constant eclipse” (2007), shown in London, Manchester, Istanbul, Alexandria and Barcelona, and “The Music Box” (2008), a performance-installation visiting several houses around Lebanon.
Her work spans between theatre and performance; in an attempt to create a bridge between the two practices through a layering of texts, physicality, ‘visual poetry’ and sound.
She acquired a BA in Drama from the Institute of Fine Arts, the Lebanese University in 2003. Holder of a KRSF/Chevening Scholarship she pursued her MA in Performance Making at Goldsmiths, University of London in 2007. In addition to training in different dance forms, she took part in over 40 workshops in Lebanon and abroad, with various practitioners from the fields of dance, acting and voice training. She is currently employed as instructor of corporeal preparation at the Institute of Fine Arts, the Lebanese University.
At the moment she is pursuing a research/practice phase with Zoukak on HamletMachine by Heiner Müller, after a one month residency at L’animal a L’esquena and Moare Danza in Spain.
